Step 1: Re-read the subject specific guide to ensure you've got everything in order.
Step 2: Read Criteria A under assessment criteria to determine if there are specifics that should be addressed when introducing your topic. Step 3: Organize your research in a way that reflects the criteria requirements for A - a good topic, a good research question, and a solid methodology. Introducing your topic usually includes contextualizing, exploring the importance of the topic/research question, and a justification or reasoning for your methodological approach (though not always). From this point forward we will be continuing with our research, preliminary and then more detailed. As you research: Provide a full citation of the source Summarize what the research said about the topic What contributions does the research you completed add to your argument/stance on a topic? What was intriguing about the research today? What unanswered questions remain? What questions developed as you read today? You will submit research weekly based upon the number of days we meet within class. Submissions will be in Managebac in two locations. Continue updating the Researcher's Reflection Space. In addition, you will submit to deadlines within the calendar in Managebac. We will also have reflective journals due where you reflect upon your planning and the progress you've made.
Read the subject guide for the topic that is currently top of your list for your EE.
Pay attention to any restrictions and rules that must be followed: e.g. world studies contemporary rule, history 10 year rule. Glance at the nature of the subject to determine if your topic fits within the EE subject guide for that subject. Read the sample topics and research questions to see if those clarify the expectations for an EE in this subject. Go back and read Section 6: Assessment and provide a detailed summary of the major points. Each subject specific guide will have their own interpretations of the assessment criteria that you must familiarize yourself with - these will provide you with an understanding of the requirements for an essay in this subject, as well. Familiarize yourself with scholarly literature:
Assignment: Browse through several articles in journals that are used in the discipline of your EE. List articles that are relevant to a topic of your EE or in the discipline of your EE. Choose an article, state the thesis, and describe the sources the author used for evidence to support the thesis. Are those sources available to you? Purpose: Familiarize yourself with questions, issues, and methodologies central to your discipline. Learn to evaluate sources used as evidence in scholarly articles. Finding and Evaluating Information: Assignment: As you search for books, articles, and other sources of information, record the databases you use as well as the specific keyword searches and subject headings they use. Explain why some searches worked better than others and what led you to alter your search strategy. Evaluate the credibility of a few of the sources, the accuracy of its information, the reasonableness of its presentation, and its support. Credibility - credentials of the author/authors, their expertise on the topic. Accuracy - information is up-to-date, detailed, lacking in bias Reasonableness - multiple perspectives are considered, information is presented objectively Support - other sources corroborate the information present and the source documents its own sources appropriately Purpose: Become proficient at locating sources of information by efficiently searching scholarly tools. Learn to evaluate the usefulness and appropriateness of a source in a research paper. Today you will engage in introspection to determine strengths and weaknesses, identifies the areas you feel confident in and those of apprehension, and identify appropriate interactions with mentors based on social norms. We will also look at the EE Calendar for internal deadlines that must be met, along with how those will be met.

Read section 5 of the EE guide and post your summary to Managebac. Begin thinking about the subject areas you would like to research - remember, this can be nearly anything that you have an interest in. Start to browse the subject guide to see the type of research questions and topics that can be studied within the subject you have the most interest in. Answer these questions in addition to your summary: Are my topics similar to those within this subject? If so, how? If not, what other subjects may be a good fit for my topics? Read Section 4 to learn more about the reflection sessions with your mentor.
Pay particular attention to what types of feedback your mentor can provide to you during your meetings and after reading a draft of your essay. Summarize the major points for section 4. Be sure to provide enough details to demonstrate that you've understood the expectations for the Extended Essay. Remember, the EE is an independent research task that is required for the IB Diploma; the guide and the subject specific guide is something you must engage with to fully understand what you're supposed to be writing about.
